Stanford Essay (Sample)

Essay Topic: “Simplify, simplify, simplify” intoned Thoreau. If you were to follow Thoreau’s advice and scale back your possessions, what would you keep and why?

"Although human memories are very fragile, these videos will remind me of where I came from, direct me towards the future, and inspire me to achieve my goals. These scrap books of the past and maps for the future are something I will not, and should not simply “simplify”. As I glance at the bottom shelf containing memories of my past, I take a blank tape from the top shelf and insert it inside my camcorder."

"Their voices of laughter were still ringing inside my mind. It was this sound, the cheerful laughter of the audience, that made me wonder how exciting it might be if I can make people all over the world smile and laugh. This experience was also the first time I realized the unique aesthetic Japanese possess. After all, this project was the beginning. As I walked down the red carpet, I was thanking the boring discussion and the withdrawn classmates in that classroom that day."

My Contribution as a Japanese (Sample)

“It just has a power, a creative power. There is an aesthetic in the way that you live your lives, and a great beauty in that.”Tom Cruise answered in an interview after starring in The Last Samurai. I heard this and thought that Japanese culture is now spreading to the western hemisphere little by little. While the strong spirit of warriors and samurais of Japan is becoming famous worldwide, the delicate and soft aesthetic Japanese possess is not understood by many people. Through growing up in Japan, I have learned that the Japanese have a keen sense of beauty, especially in reference to songs and nature. I strongly felt this while working on a film project during my high school career.

Why Swarthmore? (Sample)

The bustling city of Philadelphia is a 30-minute train ride from Swarthmore College, and New York is only 2-hours away in distance. It was simply the location of Swarthmore College that first attracted me. Philadelphia has a long history as one of the earliest places in the United States where Europeans settled, but it also is a place where new people are arriving daily. Living and studying in this location will teach me much about the United States while serving as a modern environment of inspiration. As an avid fan of musicals, Broadway has always excited me. I want to pursue a career in arts, and the close proximity of my favorite composite art will provide me with constant access to new inspiration. Swarthmore College’s location is an ideal spot for me to spend an academically and artistically balanced college life.

Porkopolis

In the South, where I grew up, pork is a vegetable. Actually, it’s used as a “seasoning,” but so commonly that it’s almost impossible to find salad without bacon, greens without fatback, white beans free of pinkish shreds of ham. It was difficult for me, then, when I decided to become a vegetarian. The decision itself, made for the usual reasons of health, ethics and ecological conservation, was easy; putting it into practice, however, was another matter. At every restaurant, every school lunch, every church potluck, every family gathering, there was meat—in the entrée, the sides, the condiments. I suspected even innocent-seeming pie crusts of secretly harboring lard.

Student Teacher

Anthony was neither a leader nor a role model. In fact, his teachers and his parents were constantly chastising him because he was disruptive, ate too much, and had a hard time staying focused on a task. I met Anthony when I was a counselor at a local summer camp. The counselors had the usual duties of keeping kids from smoking, drowning, and killing each other. We made God’s eyes, friendship bracelets, collages, and other clichés. We rode horses, sailed boats, and hunted snipe.

Give Goth a Chance

When I sat down to write this essay, I tried, as my high school English teacher always instructed, to imagine the audience for my writing. The more I thought about it, the more I pitied the college admissions screeners who would be reading a thousand essays on diversity. Along with the expected takes on race and ethnicity, how many of those essays would present their authors as outcasts, loners, kids who didn’t fit in at his or her school? How could I present myself as someone unique and interesting—strange, even—without falling prey to the cliché of the self-pitying social misfit?

The Job I Should Have Quit

You can learn a lot about me from a quick glance in my closet. You’ll find no clothes, but shelves filled with motorized Lego kits, Erector sets, model rockets, remote control race cars, and boxes full of motors, wires, batteries, propellers, soldering irons and hand tools. I’ve always enjoyed building things. No one was surprised when I decided to apply to college for mechanical engineering.

While the World Sleeps

When I wake up to the ear-splitting sound of my alarm clock, and blindly search for the snooze button, a sudden thought dawns: "What am I doing?"

The time is 5:30 AM; all is dark and hushed. My weary body feels completely drained of energy. While straining to open my eyes, still warm and snug in my comfortable bed, I am overcome with a feeling of lethargy. "Perhaps I should call in sick." Despite all my musing, and my bed's magnetic pull, I still manage to rise each morning at this ungodly hour to join the cross-country running team in rigorous training.

Rite of Passage

"Sarah, we need your help in Ukraine this summer. Can I count on you?" This question changed my life profoundly. I was asked to be a counselor on JOLT, Jewish Overseas Leadership Program, an opportunity to interact with young campers in an impoverished country and positively influence their lives. Little did I realize that this experience would impact mine so greatly.

Summer Camp Entrepreneur

The first wedding that I planned was in no way a traditional wedding. Ten eager little girls decorated the printed invitations with sequins, buttons, and markers. The same energetic hands prepared the wedding feast, consisting of bagged lunches, blintz souffle, and of course a layer cake. On the big day I looked around with excitement. Again, I noticed something odd about this wedding. All the participants and guests appeared about four feet high. The "groom" had long hair pinned up with brown lines on her face (was that supposed to be a beard?) The wedding location, a back yard with a swing set and a wading pool, seemed far from romantic. This wedding however was not supposed to be one of those types of weddings. As I pressed the "PLAY" button on the tape recorder I knew that ten 4-6-year-old girls cared deeply about this wedding. Despite the absence of a reason for celebration, I pulled all the girls into the circle and we started dancing and clapping to the music. The energy that went into the preparation on previous days could finally be appreciated. My campers and I not only celebrated the accomplishment of the mock wedding, we celebrated the fun and excitement we experienced for the first three weeks in Camp Glitter Girls. I had begun preparing for Camp Glitter Girls over four months before by budgeting, sending out fliers, confirming registration and finally making sure that every camper would have the time of her life. As I danced, I celebrated the times I almost lost my patience but didn't, the times that I planned activities late into the night because I knew that only an organized schedule would ensure the success of my camp.

Sample Weak Essay

I believe the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences at Duke is an excellent match for me. I believe college should not be merely a gateway to the work force; it should educate the student in a variety of subjects and prepare him or her for the range of challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in life. I have always been a curious person and enjoy reading all kinds of literature and nonfiction. In high school I excelled in history, English, AP psychology, and other liberal arts subjects.
